The Millennium Green is the landscaped green space between Claremont Road and the railway sidings, near the Royal Mail sorting office. It was set up in 2002 as part of the Countryside Agency’s Millennium Initiative, on land donated by Railtrack. It’s managed by a small, independent trust.
The Cricklewood Millennium Green Trust has no regular income and depends completely on volunteers for the upkeep and management of the green.
That part of Cricklewood is very mixed in income, age and ethnic background; it has a lot of social housing but few amenities. The Millennium Green is a safe space but in serious danger from the developers of Brent Cross regeneration scheme.
Quite simply, if there are not enough volunteers to maintain the green space, the land will be handed back to the Countryside Agency. This is very likely to lead to development into flats, perhaps as tall as the ones we’re seeing built on Cricklewood Lane and Edgware Road.
The Friends of Millennium Green are planning a big community day on Saturday 14 July, from 10:30am to 2pm. Let’s all roll up our sleeves and give them a big boost. Bring whatever gardening tools and gloves you have. The community will be cleaning and clearing the green. From then on, the friends aim to establish a regular group of volunteers to keep the green clean and attractive!
It’s a wonderful space; together we can hold onto it and make it an area of real value to our community.
