Keith Munro – recently visited Grandfather’s old shop in Cricklewood. Over four decades later and still called Munro’s Stores.
“My Grandfather was John aka Jack Munro. Originally from Paddington, Jack was wounded at the Somme, later he lived in White City and during WW2 was in the Home Guard. Jack Munro probably owned the shop from about 1950 to 1970. Even tho’ he was from a humble background he did like the finer things. Jack wore a tweed jacket and a cravat, smoked cigars and drank wine and whiskey and never beer. So, quite a dapper character. When he visited our family in North Harrow at Christmas time my dad would have ensure we had a small bottle of Bells (not Teachers – Jack’s orders) as he would have nothing to do with big party tin of Watneys Pale Ale that my dad was trying to open in the kitchen with a hammer and screwdriver. We probably had a beer stained kitchen ceiling in those days. Happy Days!. Jack retired to Swindon and passed away in 1980.”
