Cricklewood history

Detail from an 18th Century map of London by John Rocque showing Kricklewood and it’s gallows.

“Tyburn: The Story of London’s Gallows” by Robert Bard, 2012, states:

“The 1746 Rocque map shows a double gibbet and gallows on the corner of Cricklewood Broadway and what is now Chichele Road, NW2. The exact location is probably where Oaklands Road meets the Broadway.”

With further reference to this map, the Gentlemen’s Magazine of 1854 states:

“Casting our eyes up the Edgware Road at Cricklewood just over Shoot up Hill a little beyond Kilburn in a vacant space by the roadside are two gallows. One appears to have a projecting arm to it similar to what the old ale house signs display by a country roadside, the other is in the form of a cross and it may be observed each has its tenant but this of course was introduced by the draughtsman to shew its purpose.”
