A joint project with Environmental Improvement and Private Housing has been undertaken to encourage landlords to take responsibility for managing waste at rented properties.
In addition to the clause within a licence agreement which requires a landlord to manage their waste effectively, a voluntary pledge has been developed. The pledge can be found athttps://www.brent.gov.uk/services-for-residents/housing/private-landlord-advice/landlord-recycling-and-waste-pledge .
We are hoping that landlords will choose to sign up to the pledge, and improve the way that they take responsibility for their rented properties, by not leaving lots of waste in their front gardens or dumping mattresses or furniture on the street.
Information on the pledge will be sent to all registered landlords through the landlords’ newsletter, sent out by Private Housing this week.
Information on which landlords have agreed to sign up to the pledge will be shared between the two services in an attempt to reduce complaints about waste left in the front gardens of rented properties.

Untidy resident ordered to pay over £1k
22 April 2016,
A Brent resident from Neasden has been ordered to pay over £1k for untidy land.
Ms Regina Sally Fernandes, of Ballogie Avenue, Neasden, was sentenced at Willesden Magistrates on 15 March 2016 and was ordered to pay £1123.50 for a large amount of waste on her land.
The property was reported by a member of the public and our waste enforcement team investigated and prosecuted the offender.
Brent Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment Eleanor Southwood said:
“Most residents in Brent ‘Love where they live’ and make an effort to keep their streets and land clean and green. That’s why it’s completely unacceptable when neighbours do not clear up large amounts of waste outside their properties. It brings down the appearance of the area and everyone suffers.
“If you ‘Love where you live’, please don’t hesitate to report untidy land, littering or illegally dumped rubbish with our Cleaner Brent app or by emailing customer.services@brent.gov.uk ”
Dennis Lewis, Enviro-Crime Manager, Brent Council added:
“We will investigate complaints of untidy land, littering or illegally dumped rubbish and will take all necessary measures to investigate the incidents and will not hesitate to prosecute the offenders.”
