Why &$%! Road?
an occasional series
Some of Cricklewood’s road names are quite straightforward and like so many other parts of London, we have plenty of roads named after trees. We have Larch Road and Pine Road, and according to an 1894 map, we were going to have Elm Road across the north end of them. Of course, that would have caused all sorts of confusion with the addresses already a few minutes away on Elm Grove.
In the rainforests of the southern Caribbean, Central America and northern South America are the tall, massive and often buttressed Mora trees, whose seeds weigh up to a kilogram and some of which provide excellent wood for guitars. It turned out that Mora Road would also be an excellent name that wouldn’t be duplicated by any other street in London. Or the UK, or Ireland ….
